The College Money Blueprint

College can open doors—but it can also become one of the largest financial decisions a family makes. The College Money Blueprint helps students and families understand the real cost of college, compare financial aid offers, evaluate value and return on investment, limit unnecessary debt, and build a practical plan.

The goal is not to tell you which college to choose. The goal is to help you understand what you may actually pay, what you may need to borrow, what each option provides, and which path best fits the student’s goals and the family’s finances.

How It Works

Work through short lessons that explain college cost, financial aid, borrowing, budgeting, and value. Then compare your real options and use the guidance to build a practical family college money plan.

Step 1

Learn How College Money Works

Watch short lessons explaining total cost, net price, financial aid, loans, interest, budgeting, and the financial terms families are expected to understand.

Step 2

Compare Your Real Options

Compare net price, financial aid, borrowing, time to graduation, major, career value, and the amount your family may still need to pay.

Step 3

Build a Family Money Plan

Decide what the family can afford, what the student may contribute, what borrowing limits make sense, and what questions to ask before making a commitment.

Look Beyond the Aid Total

Two financial aid offers can look similar—or make one college appear more affordable—until you compare grants and scholarships, net price, loans, and your family's remaining costs separately.

College A

  • Published cost $32,000
  • Grants and scholarships −$15,000
  • Net price before loans $17,000
  • Federal student loans offered (must be repaid) $5,500
  • Amount still to cover after loans $11,500

College B

  • Published cost $27,000
  • Grants and scholarships −$8,000
  • Net price before loans $19,000
  • Federal student loans offered (must be repaid) $9,500
  • Amount still to cover after loans $9,500

College B leaves the smaller immediate amount to cover, but it has the higher net price and requires substantially more borrowing. Compare grants, net price, loans, and the remaining family contribution separately before deciding which offer is more affordable.

(Grants and scholarships may have eligibility or renewal requirements. Loans must be repaid, and interest may increase the total amount repaid.)

Illustrative example only. Actual costs and financial aid vary by student and institution.
